Cross Country Running

Cross-country running is one of the more well-known of the endurance sports events. Perhaps that is due in part to famous cross-country runners like Florence (Flojo) Johnson who died prematurely while at the peak of her career. Cross-country runners must endure a variety of obstacles along their way in order to bring their team through to victory. Cross-country running involves off the road terrain that involves many different obstacles such as mountains, hills, deserts, mud, and ascends and descend that may be thousands of feet. In addition, the races are usually held in the more temperate times of the year such as autumn when the ground is soft, thus adding another obstacle to the course. Because of the many different obstacles that may impede their movement, it's important for the cross country runner to make sure that he or she invests in a good pair of cross country running shoes.

The history of cross country running goes back to 1800 when it first became an organized sport in schools such as Rugby in the United Kingdom. Training for cross-country running often begins at the middle school level and proceeds even to college before one becomes a professional athlete. There are some competitions for students, but for most, cross-country running and techniques are not achieved until they become more experienced in cross-country running as a sport. The cross-country runners training does, however, teach a student the art of endurance, one of the many benefits of running cross-country.

Prior to a big many, a runner may attend a cross-country running camp where hours of practice will prepare the runner for the big day.
