Running Music

Many athletes, including runners use music as a way to keep up momentum and build up their endurance levels as they reach for the finish line. Whether it's really helpful depends on the individual person and the goals that they have set for themselves. Some runners need no more than the thoughts of the finish line to push them forward, while others rely on the sound of music to help them forget the finish line and just run.

Using music as a motivational tool can help someone who has trouble with the thought of reaching that final goal. For some, thinking about what they have to do slows the momentum, and you lose track of your real goals. The sound of the music makes some people forget about running to the finish line, and they just continue running until they reach it. Thus, instead of worrying about it, they just arrive, which gives them a win without the stress or worry about whether they will meet their goals. If you're one of those who loses momentum because you stress over your personal goals, then running music might work very well for you.

Can running music be distracting to the thought process? That may be true of some people, and you alone can define if you are one of those people. If your thought process is distracted by music, you may want to consider another type of motivational tool or choose music that differs from what you customarily listen to. Perhaps listening to classical music while running instead of pop or rock will allow you to get your mind off the stress of reaching the finish line, but will not distract you to the point that you are unable to concentrate on what you are doing.

Running music can be very calming while at the same time keeping your momentum at a top level. Music has been known through the centuries to have a calming effect on the brain, but you have you locate the type of music that gives you the best results. Don't assume that the same music you enjoy while driving in your car is going to help you win a race. When you're driving, you want something enjoyable, but when you're running, you want something that is going to help you continue running with thinking about the finish line. Once you find the running music that helps you do that, stay with it whenever you race.
